Unpacking Your Masks
When you first unpack your new mask you may be surprised to find it out of shape. Despite best storage practices for masks, storing them in bulk in a warehouse sometimes leads to masks being bent, compressed, or generally wrinkled. Don't be worried, a crease or wrinkle in a latex mask is not permanent! Before you call or email thinking your mask is ruined, please take a moment to properly unpack and restore your mask to its original beauty.
The first thing to do is remove any packing material from your mask. If there is any stuffing inside the mask, remove it. If it is in a plastic bag, has hang tags, etc, remove them. Now open the mask as if you were going to put it on. Use your hands to fully expand the inside of the mask, push out noses, ears, etc to the position they should be in. Generally, this will be all you need to do to get your mask back to normal and ready to wear. However, if a section of the mask has a crease, or an ear or nose won't stay out where it should, read on.
Latex masks have a natural memory. They really do want to go back to their original shape. Sometimes in bulk storage, however, they pick up a bit of new memory in their compressed position. The best way to remedy this new latex memory is to use mild heat, like from a hair blow-dryer! Simple hold the mask in the position you want it to stay in: i.e. hold the nose out, the ear out, the creased section where it needs to be, and then heat it up with the blow-dryer. Get it nice and hot then continue to hold it in the correct position while you let it cool back down to room temperature. For a really stubborn crease this can take several attempts to finally get the crease out, but after a bit of work you will have an amazing mask that can last a lifetime if you care for it properly.
